Watervale Riesling from the Clare Valley in SA
Crisp and dry with apple notes
The name 'Gold Sounds' is a song by my favourite band, Pavement.
I wanted the label design to be reminiscent of the old school gold-leaf
lettering on shop windows.
I was drawn to Watervale because I believe it produces the quintessential
Australian Riesling that goes so well with much of our food.
The grapes were grown on low-yielding vines (just over 2 tonnes to the
acre),on slopes about 500 metres above sea level. The family-owned
vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practices.
I particularly like this vineyard because I think it gives a textural component
to this Riesling that is so often lacking.
The fruit was processed in a number of individual parcels, with each
contour/block of vines picked as it reached its optimum ripeness and
flavour.
Each parcel was then naturally fermented separately in stainless steel,
allowing us to vary winemaking and processing techniques for each pick,
before blending immediately prior to bottling.
The wine is a straw colour with a green tinge. The nose has a big lift of
jasmine and lemon zest. The palate is full flavoured with succulent and juicy
acidity showing tangerine, some Tahitian lime and citrus spice. The wine
has impressive length, a natural acid backbone, and has a mouth-wateringly
dry finish.
I think that it matches particularly well with fish, seafood or white meat
dishes. It also works well as an aperitif.
ABV 12% / 750ml
